Mangrove Conservation: Education, Action, and Collaboration for Sustainable Coastal Ecosystems

The mangrove ecosystem plays a vital role in maintaining environmental balance, making it one of the most productive ecosystems. In addition to functioning as a natural barrier against coastal abrasion, mangroves also serve as habitats for marine organisms and provide economic resources for local communities. Batam City, as an archipelagic region with approximately 13,000 hectares of mangrove potential, is facing a significant reduction in mangrove forest areas due to development and land-use conversion. In response to this condition, a community service activity was carried out in the form of mangrove tree planting as part of efforts to conserve the mangrove ecosystem. The activity took place in Kampung Terih, Batam, involving students and lecturers, and was supported by the local community. The implementation method consisted of three stages: pre-activity (location survey, stakeholder coordination, and logistical preparation), core activity (environmental education and seedling planting), and post-activity (monitoring and scientific publication). The activity resulted in the planting of approximately 200 mangrove seedlings of the Rhizophora stylosa and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza species. In addition to contributing to environmental rehabilitation, this activity had a positive impact in raising participants’ environmental awareness and providing experiential learning for students. Evaluation indicated challenges in reaching the target number of seedlings and limited information on alternative planting locations. This activity is expected to serve as a sustainable initiative for mangrove conservation in Batam’s coastal areas and to strengthen the role of educational institutions in environmental preservation through community collaboration.

Training on Direct Method in Teaching Connected Speech at a Vocational School in Batam

This community service program aims to enhance the speaking fluency of vocational school students through the application of the Direct Method in teaching connected speech. Connected speech, a crucial aspect of natural English pronunciation, is often neglected in conventional English instruction. The Direct Method, which emphasizes immersive language use and oral interaction without translation, was chosen to improve students’ spontaneous speaking skills. The training was conducted at SMK Tunas Muda Batam with 19 students participating in a series of interactive sessions. Using qualitative-descriptive methods, pre-training and post-training observations, along with feedback, were analyzed. Results show a significant increase in students’ confidence, listening comprehension, and ability to produce reduced forms such as linking, assimilation, and elision. This activity highlights the effectiveness of the Direct Method in helping EFL learners internalize natural English rhythm and speech patterns.

Guidance In Improving Digital Financial Literacy for Housewives

This community service aims to improve digital financial literacy for housewives, so that they can manage family finances more effectively and efficiently, and utilize digital technology to improve their economic welfare. Digital financial literacy includes an understanding of how to use technology to manage finances, such as online banking, e-wallets, and financial management applications. However, many housewives still have limited knowledge and skills in this area. This also happens to families who live in the Barelang Mega Jaya Sejati Housing Complex. The method used for this community service activity is the lecture and discussion method, so that a positive interactive dialogue occurs in order to produce several solutions to these problems. The results of this community service activity can have a positive impact on improving digital financial literacy for housewives.

Education on the Implementation of the 3R System (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in the Community of Batam City

The focus of this community service initiative is to provide an understanding to the community about the implementation of the 3R system (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) as an effective waste management approach in Batam City. The background of this activity is the increase in the volume of household waste and the decreasing public knowledge about sustainable waste management. The application of the method uses a persuasive strategy to increase public awareness of the importance of protecting the environment and converting waste into economic value. To achieve this goal, materials about waste, information about the dangers of waste, and the application of the 3R method in household waste management are provided. The community service team also distributed books on how to maintain a clean and healthy environment and manage waste. The results of the activity showed an increase in public understanding of the 3R method and high enthusiasm for improving waste management in the future. This activity not only aims to provide knowledge about processing waste into something valuable, but also encourages the growth of entrepreneurial ideas related to waste management in Batam City.

Improving the Implementation of the ISO 9001:2015 Quality management system in the bottled drinking water industry at PT Makmur Bersama Sahabat

The need for practical drinking water has become an alternative choice for every human being. Practical drinking water is currently packaged with plactic materials that comply with applicable standards and are known as Packaged drinking water (Air Minum Dalam Kemasan/AMDK). Companies that produce AMDK must comply with applicable standards, such as mineral water standards (SNI.3553:2015) and quality management syatem standards (ISO.001:2015). One of the AMDK companies in Padang city, namely PT Makmur Bersama Sahabat (PT.MBS). Based on the data above, the PKM ATI Polytechnic Padang team chose PT.MBS as a partner in the activity PKM at 2024. The main objective of the PKM activity is to share science and technology (IPTEK) with PT.MBS employees. Base on the results of the pre-test and post-test, information was obtained that in general the level of understanding and implementation of the ISO.9001:2015 quality management system was in the ‘Very Good” and “Good” categories. This was proven during the discussion, PKM participants asked realistic questions in accordance with the problems they face everi day in their work situations.

Outreach In Efforts To Increase Awareness of Waste Management In Home-Based Noodle Factories In Kendari

Improper waste management, especially in home industries such as noodle factories, can cause environmental pollution and public health problems. This community service activity aims to increase awareness of waste management in home noodle factories in Baruga District, Kendari City, Southeast Sulawesi. The methods used in this activity are interviews, direct observation, education using poster media, and qualitative evaluation. The results of the observation show that the noodle factory already has a Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL) and Wastewater Drainage Channel (SPAL), but the management of liquid waste is still not optimal because the disposal of liquid waste is still allowed to stagnate around the factory area. In contrast, solid waste such as noodle crumbs and recycled waste (plastic, sacks, used egg racks) have been managed well; noodle crumbs are given to farmers as animal feed and recycled waste is given to used goods collectors. The conclusion of this activity shows that solid waste management in noodle factories has been running quite effectively, but liquid waste management still needs to be improved so as not to pollute the environment.

Digital Marketing Technology Literacy of Coffee Farmers to Increase Sales in Kacaribu Village, Karo Regency, North Sumatra

Coffee is one of the most profitable communities in Indonesia. In addition to being a foreign exchange earner, coffee farming also absorbs a lot of labor and is the main source of income for farmers, especially in coffee centers. North Sumatra Province is one of the centers of Arabica coffee with an area of 79,388.64 hectares and a total production of 71,588 tons, and Robusta coffee with an area of 17,778 hectares and a production of 9,283 tons. Karo Regency, with an area of 9,210 hectares and a coffee production of 7,411 tons, has great potential in coffee production, especially Karo coffee which is in demand in the international market. However, farmers in Kacaribu Village face obstacles in low digital literacy which hinders global marketing. Lack of knowledge about brand identity and digitalization of promotions makes coffee sales less competitive. Digitalization of marketing through digital technology can increase efficiency and market access. This Community Service (PKM) can increase the digital literacy of coffee farmers through training and mentoring, so that it is expected to have a positive impact on coffee farmers in Kacaribu Village, increase income and expand the reach of the Karo coffee market.
